The Difference Between Deen
and Religion
Religion is an organized system consisting of beliefs, practices, and symbols, performed collectively by a community. It connects its followers to something sacred and provides answers to the ultimate questions of life and existence.
Similarly, a state is a political organization that establishes order, security, and the rule of law over a defined territory and population. Its institutions exercise sovereignty and enforce laws.
These definitions are not my own; they are given by those who are running the systems of this world.
However, according to the Qur’an, the system of the world should operate in accordance with the guidance of the Being who created the entire universe. No one possesses sovereignty of their own; all authority belongs to Allah alone. The law of this world should be formed only according to the guidance given by Allah.
Since ancient times, when human beings stepped into the realm of consciousness, they forgot one fundamental truth: although they have been granted authority, that authority comes with a condition that success lies only in following the guidance given by Allah. Otherwise, humiliation and disgrace become their destiny.
This guidance was delivered by Allah through chosen servants, whom we call Prophets and Messengers. Allah revealed a message to them through revelation, and the Messengers preserved this message in the form of books or scriptures.
Today, we possess the final Book of Allah’s guidance: the Qur’an al-Furqan.
This is the Book of guidance in which there is no doubt or ambiguity (la rayba). Every matter small or great has been explained with utmost clarity, repeated again and again, and illustrated through examples.
This is the Book that claims it has been made easy to understand so, is there anyone who will seek to understand it?
This is the Book whose protection has been taken upon by Allah.
By implementing the guidance of this very Book, the Noble Messengﷺ transformed human character and established an Islamic society and state, known as “ad-Deen al-Islam.”
This is the Deen that every Prophet and Messenger struggled to establish, and all were instructed to uphold it:
“Establish this Deen.”
As long as the Muslim community remained connected to this guidance, ad-Deen al-Islam was established beyond the Arabian Peninsula and spread across many regions of the world.
Now the question is:
Did Allah give Deen, or did Allah give religion
Did the Messengers of Allah strive to establish Deen al-Islam, or merely the religion of Islam
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came into the world and conveyed Allah’s message, why did he face such intense opposition and hardship?
At that time, the Arabian Peninsula already had fire-worshippers, Jews, Christians, and followers of various religions.
If it were merely a matter of religion, then why was establishing Islam so difficult
Even today, followers of different religions live together in many countries. So what threat could there be from merely the religion of Islam Think. Reflect.
Do you follow the religion of Islam, or Deen al-Islam?
If you are the inheritor of Allah’s final guidance, then Allah has commanded in the Qur’an to establish “ad-Deen al-Islam.”
Throughout the Qur’an, the word “religion” (mazhab) has not been used for Islam, nor is this term found in the books of prophetic traditions in reference to Islam.
So ask yourself: are you not following those unworthy heirs who abandoned the original guidance and distorted Deen al-Islam into various religious forms
This is the reason why the Muslim Ummah today is suffering from decline and humiliation.
Today, in many Muslim countries, those who follow the religion of Islam may be in power, but their state systems are not established upon the Deen given by Allah.
The definition of Deen will not be found in encyclopedias;
it is preserved only in the Book of Allah’s guidance.
So reflect:
Is Islam a Deen, or merely a religion
Is Islam Deen, or is it religion
